Simple tips to learn how to relax and manage stress
There are a variety of reasons why you may find yourself feeling stressed out. Money, family, work, not to mention the stress of our current world pandemic. All these things can leave us anxious and not quite able to relax and unwind.
Short-term stress may only have a minimal impact on how we feel (in fact a little bit of stress can be good too), however, if it is left long-term without finding ways to beat those feelings, then it can really change how we see ourselves and the relationships around us.
There are a variety of ways that we can try to combat stress, however, one of the best things that we can do for ourselves is to learn how to relax.
Sounds easy, we know, but the truth is that relaxing is something that many of us fail to do for ourselves, or simply don’t always know how to approach.
Although there are many ways to incorporate conscious relaxation into your life, here are some simple ways to spend that valuable ‘me time’ and learn how to relax to take the edge off.
Deep Breathing Exercises
One of the most effective ways to relax is by doing deep breathing exercises. It may sound simple, just breathing in and out, but this is an effective technique to help combat stress and anxiety in your everyday life.
The idea of deep breathing is that you focus on your breathing and nothing else. If you struggle, you can always place one hand on your stomach and the other over your heart. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling your stomach rise, then hold your breath for the count of three. When you exhale, this should be slow, and you should feel for your stomach falling as you do it.
A few rounds of this simple exercise anytime you feel slightly overwhelmed can make all the difference. Headspace has easy to follow breathing exercises which are helpful for beginners.
If you want to learn how to relax, getting into the habit of switching off is key.
Whilst social media is a great way to connect with friends and interact with the world around us, it does have its negatives. Social media is thought to have a much bigger impact on our mental health than we realise. In fact, it is thought that social media plays a part in our self-image, our ability to make connections with those around us and increasing feelings of stress or anxiety.
This means that one of the kindest things that we can do for ourselves when learning how to relax is to simply switch off from social media from time to time and instead focus on the world around us (the real world).
Here are some small steps you can take to limit your social media use and switch off:
- Make a conscious effort to dedicate half an hour or more to setting aside your phone and take time for you
- Switch off from any screens an hour before you go to sleep to improve your sleep
- Try having a digital detox once a week and go outside instead.
Take a Long Bath in Candlelight
Sometimes it is the simplest of things that can make you feel more relaxed. This includes taking a long bath combined with fragrant candles packed full of the right essential oils.
We like the Tranquil Travel Candle by Wildheart Organic, part of our Relax and Pamper Box. The candle combines the soothing scents of lavender, neroli and sandalwood, which possess calming properties and enhance mood. Allow your mind to wander as you soak and feel the stress leave your body.
Do something you love to do
Another great way to relax is to do something that you love. It doesn’t matter what it is, painting, reading, exercising, crafts or perhaps just watching a movie with your friends, family or partner. Whatever you love to do, you can be sure that it will instantly make you feel better and relaxed.
Treat yourself with a relaxation gift box
Sometimes we need to treat ourselves to reward ourselves for the hard work we do. Why not consider a relaxation gift box, like the Relax and Pamper Deluxe Box? Filled with all the things you need to relax and pamper your mind and body, including a calming herbal tea and organic, rich dark chocolate. There’s no better gift to receive!
