How To Start Living an Organic Lifestyle | A Beginner's Guide

In honour of Organic September, we are taking time to reflect on the impact our actions have on the world around us, and how we can really make a difference.

Nature has the answer - Soil Association Organic September

Being organic is a lifestyle, and while you may think this is strictly about diet, there are actually many ways you can easily introduce organic options into your life. For example, being organic can change your skincare routine, your fashion choices, and even the luxury gifts you buy for your loved ones.

Sound daunting? Don’t worry, we’ve created a handy beginner’s guide to help you to start living an organic lifestyle, not just for September, but for the rest of your life.

What does organic mean?

According to the Soil Association, organic is a system of farming and food production that aims to produce sufficient quantities of high-quality food.

Organic farmers and producers are held to high standards and the products are produced in a way that aims to benefit wildlife and ecosystems, for example by using fewer or no pesticides or artificial fertilisers. You can find out more at the Soil Association

Did you know that wool, cotton, health and wellness products, and cleaning products can all be certified as organic too?

Why Organic?

There are so many benefits of organic farming, including:

  • Supporting biodiversity and wildlife
  • Helping to combat climate change
  • The highest standards of animal welfare
  • Reduced exposure to pesticides and chemicals which can be dangerous to our health

Tips for Living an Organic Lifestyle

1. Start small!

When you want to start living an organic lifestyle, you may be tempted to throw caution to the wind and throw everything you own away. But you can still be pro-organic and not change your entire life.

Start small and identify one or two different areas that you could incorporate organic into. For example, consider swapping your current face mask for an organic face mask, like the Green Clay & Lemon Mask and Scrub set in our Refresh & Renew Luxury Ethical Gift Box.

It’s made with Sicilian green clay and lemon peel powder and is certified organic by the Soil Association.

Another small change you can make is to swap your tea for an organic tea, which has many benefits for our bodies. All of our Wellness & Self Care luxury ethical gift boxes have different organic teas with different organically-grown ingredients.

Over time you can start to introduce different organic products into your daily routine. This is especially useful as you are likely to find that these goods are normally a little bit more expensive.

2. Do your research

Start by doing your research – both online and offline.

Unfortunately, companies can include the term 'Organic' in their product name even if they only contain a very small % of organic ingredients.

So the clearest way of understanding the organic credentials of a product is to check the label and look out for the Soil Association Logo.

Soil Association

This certifies that the products are sourced and manufactured using sustainable, organically-farmed ingredients and are not tested on animals, free from harsh chemicals, nano particles, parabens, synthetic dyes and artificial fragrances.  It also means that at least 95% of the ingredients are organic.

When you're out shopping, check the labels and ask the staff if you are uncertain.

To add to the confusion, the term organic is often used interchangeably with other terms like ‘eco-friendly’, ‘cruelty-free’, ‘vegan’ and 'natural' - but they're not all the same thing!

This article by Glamour Magazine explain the different terms in an easy to understand way.

There is a wealth of information out there that will help you, so take your time to understand what the different labels mean on the back of different products. Visit a company’s website to see how invested they are in producing or selling organic products.

3. Don’t compare yourself to others

If you are an avid social media user, you’ll be inundated with pictures of influencers and strangers who claim to live a 100% organic lifestyle. This may leave you feeling like you are not doing as well as others, but it’s important not to compare your organic lifestyle to someone else’s. The key is to live your life the way you want to. Even one small step can help benefit the planet.

 4. Do it with a partner

It’s always more fun to do things with other people. Consider enlisting a friend, family member or colleague to join you in your quest to embrace an organic lifestyle. This can help motivate you and ensure you stick to it. You could even start a group for you and your friends to contribute and learn from each other.

5. Shop at farmer’s markets

If you want to experience organic products in a natural setting, consider a day trip to your local farmer’s market. They are great places for finding natural, organic goods, from food, to clothing, to décor items. You can also learn first-hand how they contribute to the environment and how your contribution supports their local business.
