The Gift of Wellness: What to do if you're struggling to sleep during lockdown

Welcome to ‘The Gift of Wellness’ a series of blog posts about how incorporating wellness into your gifts can make your gifts not only luxurious and special, but beneficial for the recipient.  Each week, we’ll be looking at a different wellness & self-care theme and how we went about curating our Signature Range of Self Care gift boxes.

Today, I want to talk about Sleep; why it’s so important and what we can do to improve our bedtime routines, as so many of us have been and continue to struggle to sleep with the additional stresses brought by Covid-19.

Sleep is just as important as healthy eating and exercise...

Sleep is one of the most important factors when it comes to our well-being.  It affects the way we feel, and our mental and physical health.

Here are just some of the ways sleep is so amazing for us:

  • It boosts immunity
  • It can help us to stay slim
  • It improves our mental well-being
  • It helps to prevent diabetes & heart disease
  • It increases our sex drive and fertility

But so many of us have been suffering from poor sleep...

With an increase in stress, anxiety, screen time and working from home over the last few months, it’s not a surprise that a lot of us have been struggling to sleep well during lockdown.

In fact, 1 in 3 of us suffer from poor sleep.

Anxiety and stress have been one of the major contributing factors to people getting less and poorer quality sleep over the last few months, as well as more vivid dreams.

Even as lockdown starts to ease, we should stay mindful of the fact that a lot of us are experiencing anxiety around having to go out more, going back to work, sending our kids back to school, or ongoing financial difficulties.

This poses so many risks to our health in the long run; regular poor sleep increases the risk of serious medical conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

So just like we exercise and eat well to stay healthy, we need to be paying as much attention to our bedtime routine and what we can do to improve the quality of our sleep.

The perfect gift for a loved one who is struggling with sleep...

in the current environment, a curated gift box or hamper which helps you to sleep better really has the ability to make a positive impact to your life.

And when many of us still can’t see our loved ones, who may be the other side of the country, what better way to show that we care?

Sleep Well Deluxe Gift BoxOur Sleep Well Gift boxes have been thoughtfully curated to encourage the development of a bedtime routine.  Having a regular routine is really important for a good sleep, and your bedtime routine should start before you actually get into bed!

All of the products in our Sleep Well gift boxes are designed to inspire you to switch off your phone, unwind, relax and take your mind off the worries of the day.  They’re also 100% vegan friendly!

Here’s a little walkthrough of the bedtime routine from our Sleep Well Deluxe gift box:

  1. Unwind by taking a warm bath

Anxiety and stress are some of the main reasons a lot of us struggle to fall asleep at night.

A relaxing bath can often help with this, as it encourages us to relax and clear our minds.  Put some relaxing music on, take some deep breaths and try to focus the mind on the present.

Verdant Alchemy Deep Drift Bath SaltsBath salts are a great way of adding to this experience.  These Deep Drift Bath Salts by Verdant Alchemy are the perfect way to start winding down for bed.  They contain restorative minerals which promote healing, relaxation, sleep and muscle recovery.  Relaxing lavender and chamomile will help to ease and clear the mind after a long day.

They’re handmade in London and are Certified Natural by the Soil Association.

  1. Relax with a herbal tea

A warm drink before bed can often help to make us feel sleepier.  But remember to avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine or a big meal too close to bedtime, as this can prevent deep sleep.

Pukka Night Time TeaThis Pukka Night Time tea is the perfect blend for just before bedtime.  It’s 100% organic and caffeine free, and contains soothing lavender and lime flower to get your body ready for bed.

  1. Create a restful environment with some aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic essential oils to improve the health of mind, body and spirit.

It can have many benefits, including helping us to fall asleep.

Deep Sleep Pillow Mist by Wildheart OrganicsThis Deep Sleep Pillow Mist, by Wildheart Organics, is made with a dreamy blend of 10 pure essential oils.  Just spray onto your pillow 2-3 times before bed, and fill your mind with a beautiful, calming scent, helping to clear the mind at the end of a busy day.

You may find that playing ambient music or sounds such as rainfall may help too.

  1. Turn out the lights

Light can often be a factor which prevents us from getting a good sleep, especially if you live in a city.  Our Sleep Well Deluxe gift boxes contain this beautiful, Organic Bamboo Silk Sleep Mask from La Aquarelle.

Organic Bamboo Silk Sleep Mask by La AquarelleMade from organic bamboo silk, a natural fabric, it is also hypoallergenic and antibacterial, perfect for people with sensitive skin. Each mask is made using natural plant dyes, and comes with an adjustable strap for complete comfort.  A cotton bag is also included to store the mask at home or while travelling.

Give a gift that really helps...

As well as all these products being absolutely amazing, what they do is they encourage you to develop a routine, switch off your phone and wind down, which is essential for a good sleep.
